This Pyritized Pleuroceras ammonite fossil is approximately 185 million years old, from the Jurassic period. The fossil is a pyrite replacement in oil shale collected in Germany. This particular specimen was pyritized over millions of years and is a negative of the animal’s body. Organisms are pyritized when they are in marine sediments saturated with iron sulfides. In other words, pyrite has replaced its limestone shell. Ammonites are a group of extinct animals which roamed the planet’s oceans for almost 250 million years. Like a mini natural history museum around your neck!
